"I do not feel particularly old at 80. Age is just a number."
After being told by an NHS consultant that he was too old to be treated, 80 year-old Richard Swindall was devastated that his racing days in his Lotus Elan may be over.
Richard suffered from atrial fibrillation, a completely irregular heartbeat, which if left untreated can cause breathlessness and fatigue and even cause strokes. He decided to take this into his own hands and seek private treatment at Glasgow’s Ross Hall with consultant Dr Northcote who took the decision to reset his heart’s electrical timing.
Richard said: “It is wrong that people are written off because they are too old to save. Many like me will be very fit with a few more miles on the clock. I can’t thank Dr Northcote enough for giving me another lease of life.”
