A Heart Murmur is an extra sound from the heart detected by a stethoscope.

They can be benign and unrelated to cardiac problems.

Sometimes they are due to a narrowed or leaking heart valve and less commonly to a ‘hole in the heart’ such as a Septal Defect, or Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy.

A murmur is always investigated with an Ultrasound examination of the heart (Echocardiogram), and, if necessary by Cardiac CT or MRI scan.
