Cardiomyopathy simply means ‘disease of the heart muscle’.

There are two main types of Cardiomyopathy. The most common of these occurs when the heart muscle is unable to contract with the same efficiency as before.

This can be caused by poor blood supply (on account of narrowed or blocked arteries), a viral illness or some other toxin to the heart muscle, such as alcohol. There is now very effective treatment for this disabling condition including drug therapy and device therapy.

The other type of Cardiomyopathy is Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy. This can be Obstructive or Non-Obstructive and can be an inherited disorder. As a consequence, screening of other family members and genetic study of immediate family is important.

Both of these disorders can be diagnosed with Cardiac Ultrasound (Echocardiography).
